CPR saves lives

Arnie told our Leadership Development LAB;

"On May 6, 1993, I was honored at Clark County Fire District #5 of Vancouver, Washington, with a certificate of appreciation. The award, presented by the Fire Chief and the Fire Commissioner, was 'for rendering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a 5-year old boy injured in a car accident prior to the arrival of emergency responders.'

"This is what happened: at about 4:00 p.m. on a warm spring afternoon in April, my wife, Gwenn, and I were waiting at a stop light in east Vancouver. We were discussing a current business venture when we were instantly alerted by the horrible sound of a high speed, metal tearing crash right in front of our car. My heart was pounding and I had a terrible feeling of dread as we ran to the car that had been hit squarely on the right-hand side. In the car we found a completely hysterical mother, a 7-year old boy pinned in the back seat, and a 5-year old boy in the front passenger seat. The 5-year old had a pulse, but was not breathing and had no other signs of life. With the help of a third person, we calmed the mother, extracted the 7-year old, and did mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the 5-year old until emergency personnel arrived.

"The 5-year old boy did not survive. Still, I have a feeling of pride and accomplish-ment because through the proper use of our CPR training, the boy lived long enough on life support to become a vital organ donor. Many lives were saved or enriched through him."

Arnie's story dramatically emphasizes the importance of being prepared for every event, acting courageously, and remaining positive about the outcome even when our first inclination might be to react with a "what's the use?" response. In every arena of life, there are opportunities to do an even better job of preparation.

Prepare for marriage by seeing a marriage counselor.

Prepare for parenthood by attending parenting classes.

Prepare for retirement by developing a hobby or attending classes for a second career.

Prepare to care for aging parents by reading and through financial planning.

Prepare for career advancement through training. The last estimate I read said the average young person entering today's workforce will have an average of five different careers. Whether your career path is a steady climb or reaches a peak and spirals downward will be determined by your preparation, your willingness to learn, grow, stay alert, fresh, trainable and coachable.

How trainable are you? How coachable are you? How many books of preparation have you read this past year? How many improvement courses or seminars have you attended in the last 12 months?

Your greatest secret for success in the decades ahead will not be what you know today, but rather your ability to learn and grow. Tomorrow - Preparation!

"I will prepare myself and my time will come."
